The work is concerned with thresholds: the places people are warned not to enter, the knowledge families try to bury, and the moment an ordinary landscape begins to reveal what has always been present beneath it.

Miren Vale writes dark fantasy and folk horror rooted in isolated communities, old beliefs, ruined places, and the consequences of answering what should have been ignored.

The stories often begin with something small and physical: a sealed letter, a mark on the skin, a road missing from the map, or a voice heard where no one is standing. From there, they move into questions of inheritance, complicity, and the cost of being noticed.

These stories do not offer safety through disbelief.

Once the threshold has been crossed, something always follows.

Some invitations are not sent.

They are answered.

When Isla opens an unmarked library book, a sealed letter falls from its pages. Her name is written on the fold.

Inside are only two things: a place she does not know, and a time she cannot ignore.

At home, her parents recognise the seal. They know the road. They know the tide. And they know enough to be afraid.

By eleven o’clock, Isla has reached a ruined chapel above the sea, where strangers have gathered beneath broken stone and watching figures count the arrivals. Each person has been summoned. Each has been noticed.
